(special thanks to minniokie for link to parents and the following info) Andrew Jackson Stephens, son of Joseph Stephens and Catherine Dickson, was born in Bunceton, Missouri on November 29, 1830.

After completing his education, he began teaching school in 1850 or 1851. In 1852 he crossed the plains in the company of his cousin Lawrence D. Stephens and others going to California. He returned to Missouri in 1856. In 1858, Andrew traveled to Texas with a herd of sheep. Returning to Missouri in 1861 he returned to Texas in March, 1862 in the company of his mother, and the families of Nelson Hansburger and J. Q. Adams.

Andrew then traveled to Des Arc, Arkansas where, on April 12, 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate Army serving under the command of General Sterling Price. Later he was assigned to the Second Missouri Cavalry under the command of Col. Robert McCullough, where he remained until the close of the war. Stephens surrendered on May 4, 1865 and was paroled on May 17, 1865. Upon his release he returned to Texas to establish his own ranch. He then married Ala Holford on December 21, 1865. This marriage produced 6 children: Lulah (DOB December 1, 1866), George Dickson (DOB November 16, 1869), Joseph Mathew (DOB February 1, 1872), Walter Lee (DOB April 23, 1874), Harriet Catherine (DOB August 8, 1877) and Thomas Benton (DOB January 14, 1880). During his life time, Andrew Jackson Stephens engaged in all forms of cattle ranching.

He died July 6, 1902 and is buried in Aurora Cemetery, Wise County, Texas
