Retta Ida Stephens, 90, of Big Spring, formerly of Garden City, died Sunday, September 17, 2006, at a local nursing home. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Garden City with Rev. Herb McPherson officiating. Burial will be at Garden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
She was born January 13, 1916, in Bradshaw, Texas to Lavada and Larkin Bagwell. She married Bill Stephens on December 16, 1932, in Winters, Texas. They moved to Garden City in 1946. They owned the Garden City Café for many years. Bill preceded her in death on February 5, 1991. She was an avid quilter, having made all of her quilts by hand.
She is survived by 1 son: Clifford Stephens and his wife Sharon of Lovington, NM; 2 daughters: Emma Doe of Big Spring, and Retta Moore and her husband Lee of Bastrop; 1 sister: Gatelee Stephens of Abilene; 13 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 1 son: Bill George Stephens; 1 grandson: Russell Lee Moore; 1 daughter-in-law: Virginia Stephens; and 1 son-in-law: Huck Doe.
Pallbearers will be Doug Moore, Steve Moore, Bobby Doe, Floyd Schwartz, Cliff Stephens, and Jeff Stephens. Honorary Pallbearers will be Chad Isbell, Tyler Chapman, Jeff Hamilton, Alfred Anderson, Ryan Graham, Tommy Moore, Roger Davidson, Reagan Green and Bill Stephens.
